The population of Ireland is approximately 4.7 million, and the entire island is slightly bigger than West Virginia.
Ireland is a beautiful, rugged country that is breathtaking in it's beauty!
The island is divided into two different countries:
the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and Northern Ireland.
Ireland has a president and its own government,
and Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
At one time in Ireland's history, more than 90 percent of the population attended a Catholic Sunday Mass each week. Now most do not attend any church. Ireland has also become a rather diverse culture with people from many countries.
Most people in Ireland would call themselves Christians, but very few understand the Gospel or think that a relationship with Jesus Christ is possible. After all the public disclosure of abuse in in the Catholic church, there is now much disillusionment with religion. The recent economic boom (followed by a bust) influenced a development of materialism, and much of Ireland has moved away from the church and could be considered post-Christian. For an increasing number of Irish people, church is a place they go to on special occasions - to baptize their children, get married, or bury the dead - but is rarely, if ever, visited outside of those events.
